Apple came out victorious after a ruling in Washington yesterday (October 2nd) by the US Copyright Royalty Board that froze the royalty rate for songs purchased via iTunes for the next five years. The National Music Publishers Association wanted to increase the royalty fee from 9 cents to 15 cents per track. However, the CRB rejected the hike request, leaving publishers to only get 9 cents per 99 cent download of a song. It also refused Apple's request to lower the roya... MORE
On their Friday night / Saturday morning radio show "freak night" this weekend, Dutch presenters Giel Beelen and Gerard Ekdom received a rather bizarre phone call from 19-year old Otto, who claimed to be a terminally ill cancer sufferer hours away from committing assisted suicide (some forms of euthanasia/assisted suicide are legal in The Netherlands). He requested Coldplay's song "Viva La Vida" as his last wish; the presenters, at first, did not take the call seriously, ... MORE
The other day I made a post about the teenager who phoned in to national radio in The Netherlands to announce his death. Whether or not this event was genuine, I could not say from listening to the recording of the broadcast, but I said "Hoax or genuine, the truth over this will undoubtedly come out in time, and whatever the outcome, it doesn’t really matter to me anymore, as I have been touched already, and that Coldplay song will never sound the same to me again" and th... As The Queen's Princess alerted us last week, Coldplay released the brand new video for "Viva La Vida." It's a gorgeous video with vibrant colours and dramatic videography. Today, however, an alternate version popped up at OnSmash and it's completely different than the "official" version. Where the 1st video is intensely high quality, this 2nd one is intentionally grainy. And the story-lines are a bit different too. When I think of the 1st version, I can't get that im... MORE
Yesterday my roommate Joel and I were having a conversation about Coldplay. With the release of Viva La Vida they are sort of everywhere. Joel was saying how with every passing day he couldn't stand Coldplay more and more. He use to really like them during the Parachute and Rush Of Blood To The Head days. I was saying how I feel like the general population says they can't stand Coldplay, yet they remain to be one of the biggest bands out there. In any case this past week t... MORE
Due to productions issues... Coldplay have had to postpone their U.S. tour in support of Viva La Vida. Originally scheduled to launch on June 29th, the Colplay's U.S. summer tour will start two weeks later on July 14th in Los Angeles. "The band have experienced some production delays which mean that the show simply won't be ready for June 29. It's very frustrating but they promise you a show worthy of your patience and understanding when they start in mid-July. Tickets... MORE
Coldplay's Viva La Vida came storming out of the gates with over 700,000 album sold, earning the #1 spot on Billboard's chart this week. Vida is also number one in the U.K., Japan, Australia, France, Canada and Germany.... take that Lil Wayne! Not only are they burning up the traditional charts, Coldplay has also made it into iTune's record books. Already the biggest album pre-order in iTunes history, Viva La Vida also set the record for highest first-week album sales... MORE
Coldplay's latest single, Viva La Vida, bears a striking resemblance to another song by the indie band, Creaky Boards. Coincidence or theft?
Coldplay are teaming up with director Anton Corbijn for the 2nd time. The director made waves last year with the amazing Ian Curtis/Joy Division opus "Control" and recently agreed to direct a video for Coldplay's next single, the title track "Viva La Vida" from their forthcoming new album Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. According to NME.com, the vid will be shot on a beach in Holland. The band previously worked with Corbijn on "Talk" in 2005: NME.com ... MORE
The Ceasers, Yael Naim and Jet. What do they all have in common? They were all virtually unheard of before their singles were picked up to plug an Apple product. I was watching the NHL hockey playoffs last night (triple overtime! what a game!) when all of a sudden a new iTunes commercial comes on. It's Coldplay singing the title track off Viva La Vida to a cosmic background. It made me think, "Wow, even mainstream, platinum-selling artists are going after the A... MORE
This new Coldplay song is particularly stunning! Love the strings, and Chris Martin's vocals are flawless. Kudos to Brian Eno for production.
