Cindy Bullens returned after 10 years with her third shot at stardom, supported by some high-quality help: Bob Clearmountain, perhaps the top rock & roll producer/mixer of the day, was behind the board and multi-instrumentalist David Mansfield (of the Rolling Thunder Revue and The Alpha Band) was leading the musicians. Bullens herself had matured. Now a full-bodied, if less appealingly frantic singer, she conveyed more passion (and a little less excitement) than she had 10 years before, and she still knew how to rock. If Cindy Bullens was her least impressive effort, despite boasting powerful playing and state-of-the-art sound, it was because Bullens's songs had a few too many borrowings in the riffs, a few too many cliches in the lyrics. Nevertheless, Bullens remained an appealing rocker who shoulda been a contender.
