so, as it happens, chris walla - guitarist in the little known band death cab for cutie - is also a great singer and songwriter in his own right. i've heard bits and pieces of "field manual" and am going to amoeba on tuesday to pick up a copy when it gets released because it's actually pretty damn good. they just (just as in like 16 minutes ago) released the video for the single "sing again"....
via MTV News:Government snatched up master hard drive containing song files for Chris Walla's solo LP, which, coincidentally,is politically charged.By James Montgomery When Death Cab for Cutie guitarist/producer Chris Walla woke up on Monday, his "To Do" list probably read something like this: 1. Call MTV News to discuss upcoming, long-delayed solo record.2. Call U.S. Department of Homeland Sec...
so today i bought the debut album from chris walla - aka the guitarist from death cab for cutie and producer for numerous "indie" and indie bands like tegan and sara and the decembrists. i'm going to preface this review by saying this has been a hellish day at work (one of those days where everyone asks you the same 5 asinine questions with that grating, rude, arrogant tilt to their voices tha...
Another album I've been anxious to get my hands on this year, and another that didn't let me down. While I'm incredibly excited for the new Death Cab For Cutie album arriving in May, Field Manual will have to tide me over. Ironically, the whole thing sounds like a Death Cab album, and if things turn out like I hope, the new Death Cab album will sound a lot like a Chris Walla album.
In the interest of transparency, I really, really wanted to like Chris Walla’s ‘Field Manual’. I’m a big fan of Death Cab for Cutie (albeit only since ‘Plans’ was released; I had been one of those people who dismissed them for having a weird name) and I was really hoping that this would be good. The desire for a good and likeable album (and there’s a difference) was tempered, however
So I was sitting on the couch today thinking and pondering what my favorite band will be up to this year and I remembered that guitarist/keyboardist/producer/cool-cat Chris Walla will be releasing a solo project this year. Curious about the possible sound of the record I went sleuthing around the internet to satisfy my curiosity. I did not find what I was looking for but what I did find made me...
We are one week away from what is known in retail parlance as "Black Friday," traditionally the heaviest shopping day of the year. Since Mr. Folkie and I saw Zach and Miri Make a Porno, , I can't help remembering the scene where Delaney, who is black, is told by the boss that he has to work on Black Friday. The tirade that follows is both bizarre and hilarious--typical Kevin Smith. Can You ...
Every once in a while I find myself in the mood to listen to talented people sing karaoke. Some may simply call this covering a song, but it's more fun to think of it as talented people singing karaoke. I'm done with the ironic cover, I think. I don't laugh anymore when bands cover top 40 hits to be funny. Take Dan Rossen/Department of Eagles JoJo cover, that I can appreciate because he just sa...
