Charles "Bird" Parker, Jr. (August 29, 1920 - March 12, 1955) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Early in his career Parker was dubbed "Yardbird" (there are many contradictory stories of the name's origin). It was later shortened to "Bird" and remained Parker's nickname for the rest of his life and inspiration for the titles of his works, such as "Yardbird Suite" and "Bird Feathers". I've been loving Phil Schaap on the Colombia University radios stations. He is a jazz scholar has these long broadcasts playing jazz and putting them in context. He'll speak for about 20 minutes about every musicican in a 5 minute piece and give you loads of superfluous information. It's sort of tedious and most of my drives are too short to hear more than one song and the preceding commentary (actually it's long schpeel), but it's so worth it to pay attention. Best e... MORE

Tomorrow, August, 29th is Charlie "Bird" Parker's birthday which always gets me thinkin about the "woulda-coulda" questions.
