Not really a traditionalist, Chalf Hassan nonetheless does a pretty good job of capturing the aesthetic of a location or mood. His oud playing is informed far more by North African influences than Spanish ones (in particular one can hear parallels to the Gnawa gnbri throughout the album). The sound does draw from sources beyond Morocco, with keyboards reminiscent of Algerian sounds and flute pieces reminiscent of Turkish idioms. Still, it's an interesting album, and rousing at the very least. Give it a listen for some nice grooves and a bit of elly dance, not merely with more academic intents.
