Went to go see Centro-Matic the other night down in Denver. It was no suprise that they put on a fantastic show. I got there early and caught the soundcheck for both Jason Isbell (more about him later), and Centro-Matic. Always interesting to check out a soundcheck, especially when the band is playing a dumpy little bar! Anyway, Will Johson (Centro-Matic's songwriter and guitarist /singer) is a genius in my book. Those of you who have been reading my intermittent posts since day one, about a year ago, know that Twangfest 10 was the subject of my first post. Twangfest 11 was just last week. For the initiated, Twangfest is a music festival that takes place in St Louis each June. Just got the new Centro-Matic EP (finally, it came out way back in April, I believe). It's a collection of leftover songs from their last album, Fort Recovery. After learning this, I wasn't holding out of anything spectacular, otherwise it would be on the album, right? Anywho, it's pretty good overall. Still not as good as Ft. Centro-matic's music comes on like a sound from a distant dream, something new, yet unmistakably familiar. Clear images adding up to something a little vague, but in such a comforting way. Once as a child, I watched part one of some two-part children's adventure (NBC's Wonderful World of Disney circa 1972, no doubt) and that night dreamt the next week's conclusion verbatim.
