The first of seven LPs that reissue recordings from his period with Riverside contains several notable selections. The first side (which has pianist Bobby Timmons well-featured with bassist Sam Jones, drummer Louis Hayes, cornetist Nat Adderley and the leader/altoist) includes the original versions of Timmons's "Dat Dere" (his follow-up to "This Here" which is heard here in two takes), Sam Jones's "Del Sasser" and Nat's "Work Songlo"; the latter was previously unissued. On the flip side (with Barry Harris in Timmons's place), the quintet performs the initial "official" version of "Work Song," a heated "Jeannine," "Easy Living" and "Them Dirty Blues." Lots of classic music comes from this influential soul-jazz band.
