AMG Review of Cannonball Adderley Collection, Vol. 1: Them Dirty Blues
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThe first of seven LPs that reissue recordings from his period with Riverside contains several notable selections. The first side (which has pianist Bobby Timmons well-featured with bassist Sam Jones, drummer Louis Hayes, cornetist Nat Adderley and the leader/altoist) includes the original versions of Timmons's "Dat Dere" (his follow-up to "This Here" which is heard here in two takes), Sam Jones's "Del Sasser" and Nat's "Work Songlo"; the latter was previously unissued. On the flip side (with Barry Harris in Timmons's place), the quintet performs the initial "official" version of "Work Song," a heated "Jeannine," "Easy Living" and "Them Dirty Blues." Lots of classic music comes from this influential soul-jazz band.
