AMG Review of Then and Now: 40 Years of Boogie
Al Campbell
All Music GuideFuel 2000's Canned Heat collection Then and Now: 40 Years of Boogie combines the 1969 greatest-hits package Canned Heat Cookbook with Friends in the Can, recorded in 2001. The first disc rounds up the most obvious and well-loved hippie lues tracks, including "On the Road Again," "Going Up the Country," "Fried Hockey Boogie," and "Let's Work Together," while the second disc features guest shots by John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, and Roy Rogers. Unfortunately, only one member of the original band, drummer Filo DeLaParra, is present on the newer material. Anyone but the most die-hard fan should stick with a decent single-disc greatest-hits package.
