I find this band so soothing. Pretty much matches my Saturday morning mood, lazy and a little melancholy.I don't have many specifics on them, I think Califone is a Chicago band; but I am sure that you will not find more interesting instrumentation.
i'm loving this record. thanks jenny tatone. i was intriqued by your post (that you felt compelled to tell us all their tour dates), was in amoeba, the vinyl looked cool, and now, now, now i'm hooked.sweet production, great vocals, melodies, weirdness.

When I was up at 3:30 this morning putting the finishing touches on a draft, I thought of this song.I am feeling awfully tired today, but the tune perks me up.
New WaxChicago's Califone, now signed to Dead Oceans, which is home to the likes of Bowerbirds, Akron/Family, Phosphorescent, and John Vanderslice among others, follows up their wonderful 2006 album Roots & Crowns with a new album entitled All My Friends Are Funeral Singers. While the album stand's on its own musically, it is also a companion piece to Califone lead singer Tim Rutili's first fea...
Mmmmmrrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrg (awkward stretch). Yawn. Mmmm. inhale. exhale. Garbblegrabble. Hmm...Wow. It's really been quite awhile MOG hasn't it? I know. Well, I've been busy. Sorry. But that doesn't mean I haven't been getting my music fill. I have. At points I became too full. But I'm past that uncomfortable stage and ready to digest. The first part...
A promise is a promise; otherwise I wouldn't be taking the time to write...Arriving a bit on the early side, a few drinks were ordered and the waiting began. I noticed the percussionist, Ben Massarella, at the bar enjoying a pint...or two...An hour or so later, Califone took the stage and I was immediately taken aback. As I said in my previous post, I'm digesting them, which is my way of saying...
My first-ever review for Harp is up now at the magazine's website.http://www.harpmagazine.com/reviews/cd_reviews/detail.cfm?article_id=4838It's a review of Califone's Roots & Crowns, a wonderful record that has grown on me steadily since I got it. "The Orchids", which is a Psychic TV cover, is getting all the press, but I might just like the percussion-heavy, hallucenogenic "Pink & Sour" bette...

They're playing for free tonight at the Walker Art Center for free--followed by a screening of the Manchurian Candidate. Fabu...

oyHere some fun: Crazy covering crazier. Califone does the Psychic TV track well, I think, although the lyrics are simpler than a Califone-written song.
This is my first listen of Califone, ever. Roots & Crowns is so good. What's up with this band? How could I have not listened to them before? They have almost as many albums as the Rolling Stones. Which other ones do I get? Thanks Mr. Hyman to turning me on to them by the way.
Elements of blues, country and folk all interspersed with sparse electronics and atmosphere. Califone return with new album 'All My Friends Are Funeral Singers'. Marc Higgins reviews.
