On this record, he tackles both classic honky tonk tunes, new country cuts, pop songs, R&B and soul numbers, which are all given a contemporary, early '70s gloss. But its Smith, with his haunting, pure voice gives each cut country grit, bringing each song down to earth. It's a record that convinces you Smith, in a perfect world, would have been a star.
