>>>>1) I think **Cake** is (are) under appreciated as interpreters of others' work. They reimagine **War Pigs** not too differently, but instead of sludge we get a crystallized sound and a bass that's nervous and edgy creating a tension not found in **Sabbath's** version.>>>>2) I wonder why I can open my DVD player from across the room using my remote? >>>>3) REM's new cd disappoints only in so...

SUNDAY UNDER COVERS WITH CAKE

Many have mentioned the ability of a good cover to enhance, or even change completely our perception of that song. Sometimes the novelty of hearing a familiar song done radically different is very satisfying. Sometimes not.Well this track by Cake is not radically different, but it is more grounded in rocknroll. And love that trumpet.

Sunday Surviving Under the Covers With Cake

This is a particularly striking cover because I'm sure we all think of this song so much as a feminist anthem. Hearing it done by a male vocalist in this musical setting really knocks me out. The minimalist accompaniment and funky bass line really serve up the lyrics. The way the guitar duets with the singer near the end really sends me. Then that trumpet bridge into the ride out. Beautiful!

My Husband's Theme Song

My husband worked 104 hours last week and he worked 94 hours this week. He is on-call today (this means he went to work early this morning and comes home tomorrow afternoon.) He was on-call last Friday and SUnday and today, Saturday. He has to take a big work test next Saturday. Next Sunday will be his first day off in 20 days. Worked three weekends in a row. That sickly scent is always, always there...

Around a year ago, probably a few months more than a year, actually, but nonetheless, around a year ago, a friend made some crack about the way I was laughing, and how that it sounded more like that I was wheezing instead of laughing, and that if I was, in fact, having trouble breathing, then maybe she should go and get help for me, rather than to continue wasting time criticizing the manner in...

another music video lovingly dedicated to the MOG-O-SPHERE

I went to a Cake show about five years ago, got into a fight with security, waited outside the back door and shook John McCrae's hand before he got into an early 90s Honda Accord. With nothing else to do after that, I hitched a ride with a Mexican and a man with a gray pony tail. We popped a bunch of Xanax, made a quick stop at a crack house, and parted ways a couple miles from my home. I g...

«Flashback« CAKE – The Distance

bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse♫ Cake – The Distance / 1996One of the best lyrics ever. Hands down. And in one of the best songs of the 90s. Or ever, as far as I am concerned. “The Distance” is one of those songs that will never get old. I don’t listen to it enough these days, but I should. I…
