AMG Review of The Versatile Burl Ives!
Bruce Eder
All Music GuideBurl Ives was nearing the end of his second stay at Decca Records when he recorded this album, a smooth countrypolitan-style adaptation of his established sound, with the Anita Kerr Singers providing mostly pretty restrained accompaniment, all under the direction of Owen Bradley, working with some of the best players in Nashville. It's a long way from "Blue Tail Fly," but it still works as a countrified twist on Ives' folk/pop sound. And he does amazingly well with a jaunty, almost pop-style rendition of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line."
