Saw Buddy last night in Manchester and I can safely see it was the most incredible and soulful performance I have ever experienced. I've seen him many times but last night he was on a whole nutha level again using the incredible acoustics of the symhony hall to draw every last ounce of tone from his guitar.... MORE

When I wake up with the blues, I can only turn to the greats for solace. A few years ago, the legendary Buddy Guy got divorced, and then put out an album of slow, sad blues songs, which had never been his style. Buddy has always been more of the smoking, leave 'em dead and gasping, kind of blues guitarist.
And, a snappy dresser, as I think you will agree.

Happy Birthday to Buddy Guy, born on this day in 1936 in Lettsworth, Louisiana. Jimi Hendrix stated that Buddy Guy was a huge influence on his playing, and Eric Clapton has called him the greatest blues guitarist ever (hence my cheekiness in the post title). With Muddy Waters as a mentor, and the likes of Freddy King, Magic Sam and Otis Rush as musical compatriots, it stands to reason that Guy would become a blues force to contend with.

Perhaps the most important blues musician still touring today (I'd say tied with B.B. King) is Buddy Guy. Without a doubt the best showman to ever play the blues, and the biggest influence to all the rock guitar guys from the late 60's early 70's. Eric Clapton said "Buddy Guy was to me what Elvis was for others.He is by far and without a doubt the best guitar player alive...if you see him in person, the way he plays is beyond anyone."
