In the early years of his career, Bud Shank doubled on flute which had just as much success as he did on sax. By early 1982, Shank stopped playing the flute and concentrated instead on his alto sax where his fluid, imaginative and angular, daring solos became his trademark for the rest of his life.

Shank also recorded in 1986 an album of concertos for alto sax and orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.In 2005, Shank formed his own big band and played at the 40th Anniversary concert celebrating Stan Kenton's Neophonic Orchestra, one that fused the worlds of jazz and classical music with some exciting listening for serious music lovers of all inclinations.
