At six p.m. EST, I will give my final presentation in front of the Technical Communication faculty at NC State for the Master's degree. I'm going to start mentioning singles that you may have missed hearing, but you shouldn't overlook. The first one is Bruce Cockburn's cover of Fats Domino's "Blueberry Hill" on the Breakfast in New Orleans album. It's an incredible version that will thrill you with Bruce's and Margo Timmons! vocals and Bruce's incredible guitar riffs. Turn it up loud and enjoy!

Folk Favs

Blog post image preview Here's more of what I'll be listening to in the coming weeks before 2006 becomes history- Folk Alley Favorites for 2006 When National Public Radio asked us to submit the Top 10 folk CDs for 2006 (not such an easy task!), Linda collected lists from the Folk Alley staff and boiled the pile into a comprehensible list. NPR thanked us for working so quickly by posting the list on their web site and including the link on several E-newsletters sent out to music loving pub... MORE

Blog post image preview Bruce Cockburn was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and spent some of his early years on a farm outside Pembroke, Ontario.Through the 1980s Cockburn's songwriting became first more urban, later more global, and then, ultimately and most famously, more politicized: he became heavily involved with progressive causes. His growing political concerns were first hinted at in two astonishing but little-known discs, Humans and The Trouble with Normal. As far as casual radio listene... MORE

Have you ever lost a song? This song was lost to me for close to 20 years! I had a tape of it but it was sort of taken from me and all I could remember was how it sounded and who the artist was. Bruce Cockburn has a ton of music and because I just had a bootleg version I didn't know which album it came from. Now with itunes I could actually listen to all his stuff and finally be "re-united" with this beautiful song that makes me cry. It's a song I use to listen to bac... MORE

Musical War Correspondent

I interviewed Bruce Cockburn yesterday. It was one of the most powerful talks I've had with a musician. He spent the bulk of our 1/2 hour talking about his trip to Baghdad in 2004 - describing in vivid detail walking through a modern airport that was completely empty apart from a handful of Ghurkas working for Custer Battles. And being surprised at how modern the city looked, and how impressed he was that the smart bombs actually worked, or at least how little was destroye... MORE

I'm still enjoying an endorphin rush from the Democratic tidal wave yesterday - after 14 years of disappointing elections I'd almost forgotten how good it feels to be on the winning side. Granted, I'm still in a blazing red district here in AZ, but a longtime family friend from church just got elected to the State Legislature as a Dem (after trying for about 10 years) so that's kinda cool. Hopefully we won't waste time whining and bickering, but I've known the Democratic P... MORE
