British Sea Power Biography

Source: Wikipedia

British Sea Power are a four-man indie rock band based in Brighton, England. Their style ranges from the sweeping, often epic, guitar pop sound to the visceral and angular. Critics have likened their sound to post punk and new wave groups like Echo & the Bunnymen and, at the same time, the alternative rock of The Smiths and Pixies. The vocals owe much to David Bowie and on some songs the post-punk influence of Joy Division is clear. The band is comprised of * Yan - Vocals, guitar * Noble - G...Read More >

I was lucky enough to get a heads up about this show from a friend. I think I would have heard about it independently, and I was aware of British Sea Power, but I may have blown it off if he hadn't insisted that I need to go. What would we do without friends who look out for our best interests? So, the show. We arrived at the Vaudeville Mews for the opening band, Colour Music. Four guys in completely white jumpsuits, save for a piechart logo, took places behind compl... MORE

For the last year, I thought Pitchfork had turned a corner. Long despised for being indulgent to a fault, taking contrarian opinions for the hell of it and hyping up bands that no one really likes, Pitchofork has actually been more responible, balanced, and actually journalistic since gaining the spotlight however unmerited it may be. Sure enough, today they came out with a particular prickish move that reminded me of why I hated them in the first place. My issue is with... MORE

British Sea Power’s third album Do You Like Rock Music? is an album I very nearly bought just for the title. I’d heard good things about it since its release, and whereas I’d also heard good things from a few friends, I have to admit I was only vaguely aware of BSP ; I’d dismissed them as just one of dozens of moody provinicial British bands, the Franz-Arctic–Editor-Kooks set. The problem is, I’m not sure I was wrong to — I’ve listened to Do You Like Rock Mus... MORE

British Sea Power have a new video out and a new album. If you're in the UK, you can cop Do You Like Rock Music? anytime, but if you are States-side, you'll have to wait until February 12th. Here is the new vid for "No Lucifer": "No Lucifer" by British Sea Power
It's kinda spooky and, appropriately, super reminiscent of Jan Svankmajer's "Faust" movie. Good thing there's subtitles too, coz some of those words are fancy... "Raleigh, twenty, yeah." H... MORE

When I set out to write this review, I felt less inclined to suggest that "Do You Like Rock Music?" is an early album of the year candidate. What I will write instead is an argument for British Sea Power being a band of the decade candidate. That may seem strange to American ears, but keep in mind how foreign a suggestion Blur would have been to the golden years of the Pavement wasteland of early 1998. Even after "Song 2," Americans still don't fully appreciate a band that su... MORE
