With original Contortions and later Bush Tetras leader Pat Place on guitar, one might expect something more unconventional. But Each Day Blues turns out to be pleasant, quiet, jangle pop, not far removed from the earl-'80s Hoboken sound. Brian Kelly's vocals sound like a cross between the Go-Betweens' Robert Foster's quiet moments and Red House Painters' Mark Kozelek's less mournful ones (with a dash of Beat Happening's Calvin Johnson). On tracks such as "I Can Still See You," Place uses space perfectly, filling out little squiggles and twisting, near-Eastern touches underneath Kelly's off-kilter (yet, effective) warbling. Modest with prominent little bites.
