Occasionally, one comes across a male vocalist who has a very female style of singing and actually sounds like he could be a woman -- and that can be an artistic plus. It has certainly worked well for Jimmy Scott, one of the finest male jazz vocalists of all time. And having a female-sounding voice is also a positive for singer/songwriter Brett Dennen, whose So Much More demonstrates that he shares Scott's strong appreciation of Billie Holiday. But unlike Scott, Dennen is not a jazz singer; his turf is folk-rock, and Tracy Chapman is as strong an influence -- or an even stronger influence -- than Lady Day. The Holiday influence asserts itself in his vocal phrasing but not stylistically or genre-wise; Chapman, however, has influenced Dennen's songwriting in addition to influencing his soulful phrasing. The feminine quality that Dennen brings to his introspective, sometimes melancholy performances doesn't mean that he is devoid of male influences; discerning listeners will also hear traces of Bob Dylan and Dave Matthews in his material (Dennen clearly shares Matthews' appreciation of African pop). And none of these influences -- either female or male -- are people Dennen goes out of his way to emulate; it's clear that Dennen is his own person whether he is reflecting on romantic matters or sociopolitical concerns. Gratefully, Dennen avoids being preachy on his more sociopolitical lyrics; his approach is understated and subtle, and he doesn't come across as someone who is getting on a soapbox and beating listeners over the head with his beliefs. So Much More isn't quite as consistent as it could have been -- some of the tracks are excellent, others not as memorable -- but overall, this 2006 release shows Dennen to be an intriguing and expressive part of folk-rock.

The thing about this kid's music - is I have heard it before. I heard it in Bob Dylan, in Harvest, in Bread and in many other artists....the difference here is - 20 years from now - on a note on this blog...someone will write a note like mine...and he will be the first name listed as something someone heard once. This is classic music - knows no time, no shelter...and yet...will ride the hear...

At 26 years old and 6'5", with thick crimson hair tangled in a bandanna, bare feet, freckled skin and a cabbage patch face, Brett Dennen renders a kind of honesty often lost among the "fake faces" of today's youth. Compared to legends like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, his music is familiar and his lyrics are real. He is a man of truth, a testament to a frustrated generation seeking a social "revol...

It's official, Brett Dennen needs a hair cut. Trust me on this one Brett; cutting your hair would be good for your career. You already have slightly awkward facial tics while you're playing {think John Mayer's classic grimaces} and while your long hair oft strays in front of these moments it's not helping as much as you might think. Consider this an open and honest letter Mr. Dennen. I'm ab...

I was recently introduced to Brett Dennen through a friend, she showed me Dennen's "Ain't no Reason", and I told her that I hadn't heard a song with dumber lyrics since Lil' John. I mean, read this, the first part of his song. It doesn't make any sense at all!"There aint no reason things are this wayIts how they always been and it tends to stayI can't explain why we live this way, we do it ever...

Say Xavier Rudd and Brett at the Aladdin this year, went back for more when Brett did his own gig a couple of months again downtown. Love this vocals. The concert wasn't as good because the band overplayed his vocals.. but enjoy this one on here. Is there really any reason?

I saw Brett Dennen tonight at the El Ray Theater. Dennen lives here in LA, and he was pretty awesome! I recommend seeing him if you get the chance. At the very least, check out some of his music. Tonight, he had a band with a guy who could get sounds that I've never heard before out of a normal guitar. You should have seen some of the ways he played that thing!I've got tickets to see Jet at the...
