If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, The Story, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, Give Up the Ghost, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When things are Spartan, her voice is haunting and gripping, wrenching out operatic emotions, but Give Up the Ghost trumps The Story because she allows herself to lighten up, to rock again on "Dreams" and jump into the rollicking "Caroline," which does indeed recall the barrelhouse jaunt of Honky Chateau. Carlile still prefers sobriety to levity but it never feels affected; it's music that gets under your skin and cuts to the bone.

Carlile gets help from Rick Rubin and adds a winning sequel to The Story.Brandi Carlile's third full-length album, Give Up the Ghost, opens with a single strum and then the cuffed chugging of her acoustic guitar as the 28-year-old Seattle native starts singing in her warm alto. The song, “Looking Out”, builds to a soaring pre-chorus that shows off Carlile's remarkable power and range. The band

A Good ol' Fashioned Album Review

Brandi Carlile has done it again--she's made another album chock-full of good songs. Her voice has a similar timbre to Neko Case, but it makes me shiver like Gillian Welch. Her songs tend to the more upbeat than either of those counterparts, however. Give Up the Ghost has guests from across the music world and emerges as a new favorite in my current rotation. 1. This album opens with "Looki

The Seattle Times (MCT) -- Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile is touring to promote her latest critically rated album, "Give Up The Ghost," out earlier this month. Brandi Carlile - "Dreams"

The first time I heard Brandi Carlile sing was in 2005 at a small advertising firm in New York City. Playing for about 30 or so creatives and ad persons in a conference room, Carlile's voice lit up the space with an explosion of unexpected sound, nearly rendering her and fellow bandmates Tim and Phil Hanseroth's acoustic guitars useless. It was a lot of noise from such a little person—and a bea.
