AMG Review of Just Doin' Our Thang
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideFlutist Bradley Leighton's Just Doin' Our Thang is reminiscent in ways of Herbie Mann's recordings of the 1960s. Leighton turns a variety of pop and R&B-oriented tunes into soul-jazz, playing a wide repertoire that ranges from "Sunny" to "Summertime," from "Europa" to "Speak Low." The flute and organ combination is a little unusual but works well, with organist Rob Whitlock playing in a style not that far from that of Jimmy Smith. Guitarist Bob Boss is also an asset. Not many surprises occur, but the music is pleasing and is easily recommended to fans of the jazz organ and the funkier side of jazz.
