The singer for a recently-formed rock band in San Francisco, with whom I have developed a relationship of mutual friendliness and respect over the last several months, sent me an electronic verbal message of some sort - on AOL they used to be called "instant messages"; I don't know if facebook uses the same terminology - a few weeks ago, asking if I could suggest a good band name. I let fly five or six possibilities off the top of my head, but I realized that the last one... MORE

Note from JM: I've added, by request, a brief paragraph on some of the lyrics on this album, and my impressions thereof. I'm still not happy with this piece – but it'll do. Once again, the amendments are about two days later than planned. There's a lesson here, but I don't know what it is. This review is about two days later than I’d planned because, for the most part, I haven’t the slightest clue what’s left to say about Bob Mould. It’s not just that he’s intimid... MORE

Just fyi in case anyone hasn't heard: Bob Mould has come out with a new album and is going to tour in March. Not in Michigan though :( Anyway, you can listen to the whole thing (legally and free) online before you buy here. I'm partway through my first listen and will reserve judgment for later.... MORE

Ok, so ive been quiet for a while and this is fairly old news, but i popped along to the Roundhouse to see Bob Mould preview new tracks from his upcoming album 'District line' (Feb 11th release?). Morrisey, starting his first date of a weeklong stint took the main stage with Bob off in one of the side rooms housing no more than 40 people. He did seem a little nervous with the new songs, all of them being played live for the first time. However despite a major guitar fault wit... MORE

The legendary frontman for Husker Du and Sugar, Bob Mould kicks off a tour of North America on March 5th. This time he will be promoting his new album District Line, instead of the live DVD "Circle of Friends" which was the focus of his last tour.
District Line features Fugazi's Brendan Canty on drums, but I'm not sure if Canty will join Mould on the tour or not. Here are the dates that were published on NME .com today:
Minneapolis MN First Ave (March 5)... MORE

I'm sure you know that Bob Mould once fronted Husker Du and later Sugar. Husker Du recorded one of the great epic albums of all time, Zen Arcade. Anyway, Mould is back with a new solo album, District Line, due Feb. 2 on Anti-, the label that Tom Waits and Nick Cave and my fave singer/songwriter Jolie Holland all record for, and this preview suggests that the album is gonna be a winner.... Alternative rock legend Bob Mould has just signed to ANTI - Records and will release his new studio album via ANTI - in February. The album is titled District Line and it's described as:A hair-raisingly emotional, undeniably catchy, loud, mature guitar rock album, bolstered by the ace drumming of Fugazi’s Brendan Canty, Mould’s forthcoming disc affirms he is more relevant than ever. From the achingly honest and instantly memorable opening track, "Stupid Now" and the gorg

If you love:
Then you'll love Bob Mould's first-ever live DVD , Circle Of Friends. The DVD drops on October 9th, 2007, two years ago on the dot from the date it was recorded at Washington DC's 9:30 Club. On stage Mould is joined by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), Richard Morel (Morel), and Jason Narducy (Rockets Over Sweden) for songs from Mould's solo career, as well as tracks from Mould's former bands, Husker Du and Sugar. Interviews with all the players... MORE

I first saw Husker Du in 1984, in Florence, NJ, after a long drive from State College that involved losing my car's exhaust system on the Schulykill Expressway; me, my wife to be, and three others, dressed in black and skinny punky as hell, waiting, hoping someone would stop to help us. One guy finally stopped and essentially tore the pipes out with his bare hands. We stuffed them in the trunk.
The show was good-- Dead Milkmen opened and before the show we were sitting ... MORE

So, this album [Body Of Song] has some elements of electronica in the vocals and maybe a bit in the drum tracks (which sound almost synthetic). The effects are occasionally revelatory, and sometimes distracting. Overall though, I think that the album is really good. The song writing is consistent with what you expect from Mould. The special edition comes with a bonus CD that has extras, remixes and the like. That is fun, but its not what you might expect. It is a really dancy... MORE

Though I'm old enough to have been just at the right age to appreciate Husker Du at the height of their ferocity, my teenage heart belonged to both the yin of Genesis and ELO and the yang of AC/DC and Iron Maiden (not so much Maiden, really). Point is, I had no use for a tinny hardcore band in constant emotional turmoil fronted by a pudgy (gay?) nerd. But once the band discovered melody around Candy Apple Grey and especially Warehouse, I took notice. And wouldn't it be grea... MORE
