If The Times They Are a-Changin' isn't a marked step forward from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, even if it is his first collection of all originals, it's nevertheless a fine collection all the same. It isn't as rich as Freewheelin', and Dylan has tempered his sense of humor considerably, choosing to concentrate on social protests in the style of "Blowin' in the Wind." With the title track, he wrote an anthem that nearly equaled that song, and "With God on Our Side" and "Only a Pawn in Their Game" are nearly as good, while "Ballad of Hollis Brown" and "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" are remarkably skilled re-castings of contemporary tales of injustice. His absurdity is missed, but he makes up for it with the wonderful "One Too Many Mornings" and "Boots of Spanish Leather," two lovely classics. If there are a couple of songs that don't achieve the level of the aforementioned songs, that speaks more to the quality of those songs than the weakness of the remainder of the record. And that's also true of the album itself -- yes, it pales next to its predecessor, but it's terrific by any other standard.

If there ever was a time for Mr. Dylan's perspective...it's now!Adapting to the speed of change these days is a constant upgrade continuum. It's always refreshing taking the time to listen to words of true wisdom by one of Americas most respected philosopher/poet/songwriter/political activists. I love how Moggers are so tuned in to the music. The way Moggers seem to take the time to actually lis...

One Too Many MorningsIn "One Too Many Mornings," a weakened, weary singer is quite literally on the threshold of a breakup. It has been said that the song was occasioned by Dylan's real-life breakup with girlfriend Suze Rotolo (pictured on the Freewheelin' Bob Dylan cover). In a deceptively simple three-verse lyric with a refrain, Dylan explores the psychology of the lovers' breakup. The first ...

William Zanzinger killed poor Hattie Carroll With a cane that he twirled around his diamond ring finger At a Baltimore hotel society gath'rin'. And the cops were called in and his weapon took from him As they rode him in custody down to the station And booked William Zanzinger for first-degree murder. Above and beyond, one of my favorite songs is "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll". In the m...

Bob Dylan played Manhattan's City Center on Monday night. In his two hour set, he did any number of remarkable things, including an almost spoken-word version of "Boots of Spanish Leather," a lovely 1-2 punch of "Don't Think Twice" and "Tangled Up In Blue," and a steam-roller ride on "Highway 61 Revisted." But his singular achievement was playing, brilliantly, nine songs from his two most recen...

Zantzinger: "I Should Have Sued Dylan...."

From the New York Times this weekend. William Devereux Zantzinger, whose six-month sentence in the fatal caning of a black barmaid named Hattie Carroll at a Baltimore charity ball moved Bob Dylan to write a dramatic, almost journalistic song in 1963 that became a classic of modern American folk music, died on Jan. 3. He was 69. Enlarge This ImageBaltimore SunWilliam D. Zantzinger was convicted ...

I've long been known as a hyperbolic person, so forgive me, but I'm Not There is the best movie I've ever seen in my life.1. There are movies that I love almost as much and maybe in some ways more, but this one seemed somehow on a higher plane due to its non-linearity; I don't see super-arty movies a lot, so maybe its artiness was a new thing to me, but the fact that it was arty and I understo...

Patients, durin' the past few days, the dark-tinged gospel sounds of Bob Dylan's "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" and The Times They Are A-Changin' have been echoin' through the halls of the asylum. On January 3, William Devereux Zantzinger, the subject of Bob Dylan's 1964 track "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" died in obscurity at the age of 69.
