This Halloween season (and it has become a full-on season, for the love of Hallmark, with kiddie trick-or-treating trumped by costume-clad adults indulging in ribald chicanery at parties and public events), the scariest sight I’ve seen so far has nothing to do with witches or skeletons or glowering jack-o'-lanterns. But vampires are definitely involved. The horror was couched in a video clip of .

It’s been immortalised in one of the greatest songs of the last 40 years. It’s one of the most desired playgrounds in an artist’s career. It started out as an entertainment palace for fights and circuses.Strange as it may seem, the Albert Hall is the Victorian equivalent of Staples Centre, MSG and all the music sheds. Glistening anew after a serious renovation, it’s one of the best places

Seven simple rules for a life in hiding

bq. Seven simple rules for a life in hiding:bq. One, never trust a cop in a raincoat. bq. Two, beware of enthusiasm and of love, each is temporary and quick to sway. bq. Three, if asked if you care about the world's problems, look deep into the eyes of he who asks, he will not ask you again. bq. Number four and five, never give your real name, and if ever told to look at yourself, never look.bq...

1. Percy Sledge, "When a Man Loves a Woman." He really didn't need to make any more records after this one ... it was that great.2. Buffy Sainte-Marie, "Little Wheel Spin and Spin." Buffy Sainte-Marie was an acquired taste, but she was far more experimental than most of her fellow female folkies.3. Alan Price, "I Put a Spell on You." I really loved this version ... as many great versions as the...

My friend at Columbia Records gave me this nifty new red box called "Dylan." He knew that I have every song on this set "38 times" (as he put it), but thought I'd like to have it.What is one to make of this? 51 Dylan songs, and as collections go, it's an ok place to start, but is there anyone even mildly interested in Bob Dylan who doesn't already have a whole mess of these songs? And in what D...

Forgive me.

http://www.stereogum.com/archives/003805.htmlI beg your forgiveness for a couple of reasons:1. My linking to Stereogum. 'Cause everybody reads Stereogum. Or at least everybody's supposed to. Because it's a kind of funny website. Sorry. But they have posted something kind of unforgettable.2. Any trauma you might experience watching the clip featured in that Stereogum post; any grotesque visions ...

Who Put The You in the You Es Ay? (Numbers 1 - 5)

Long lost, but found again mogger, Joxley, has posted a wonderful post on bands that are uniquely "British, British, British To The Core". Yet I can't help but feel like a noisy, opinionated American, when reading it. What's you say? How out of character CBW, or for that matter, your country of origin!Without a doubt and without arguement, the relationship between both Britain and The U.S. h...

"this":http://www.newyorker.com/critics/dancing/articles/061106crda_dancing might help explain some of the things in the video Joxley posted last week. Not justify, mind you, but I do have to admit I was wondering why it looked like some of the dancers had escaped from a low-rent version of Cats, or something. I'm still disappointed in Bob, but he's got broad shoulders - he can take it.
