The stage on the water, the full moon just overhead, the perfect breeze, and Bob. Now that was a summer evening to remember. My favorite concert of all time was at Jones Beach; Blind Melon, Soundgarden, and Neil Young. And Bob may have trumped it. Last week was Bob Dylan's birthday. Now I havent always been a fan of him I believe I used to refer to him as "Mumblin' Joe". But like a taste for the finer things in life my appreciation for him has acquired with age. If you havent yet heard his past two albums "Modern Times" and "Love and Theft" I encourage you to go out and get them right now... This is a two part confession or possibly a declaration. Part one......I am no longer gong to be embarrassed of my Rolling Stone magazines. I have had subscriptions to hipper magazines to-wit, Paste, Blender, Spin, Mojo, they didn't make me cooler. I didn't find out anything cooler,harder or faster. Bob Dylan announced his plans for the summer: a nearly 30 stop tour. Dylan will turn 66 in May and is staging yet another comeback. His 2006 release Modern Times(Columbia) was his 32nd studio album and first #1 album since 1976's Desire. The album was also self produced under the pseudonym "Jack Frost". Well, I saw Dylan from up close tonight. Got to hear 4 new tunes I had never heard him play, all from Modern Times - Rollin' & Tumblin', Workingman's Blues #2, When the Deal Goes Down, and Thunder On The Mountain. It's kinda cool that Bob is the only vocalist in the band- None of his bandmembers even have a vocal mic on stage! I would love to see him play some guitar again, though. Dylan is on the road. No surprise there. And every morning after a Dylan show, I check out the set-list. Last night in Chicago, for example, he played "Joey" from "Desire," "Positively 4th Street," and one of my faves from "Blonde On Blonde," "Most Likely You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine." Okay, "sucks" is an overstatement, but I love Dylan, and I read so many posts about how great this album was that I bought it new. And this is not great Dylan. Blonde On Blonde, Highway 61 Revisited, Blood On The Tracks - these are great Dylan albums. How can I tell? Well, each one starts with a great song, everything else on the album is at least good, there are other great songs - you know, it's like a letter grade - more A's than B's generally averages to an A. Picked up three new CDs this week, and I thought I'd share my opinions on them. 1. Bob Dylan- Modern TimesEasily one of the best CDs I've bought in a long time. Every review you've read that says that this is one of, if not the best, album of the year, is one hundred percent correct. I strongly recommend this album to anyone that likes music at all. Bob Dylan Modern Times Columbia This record came in a wooden box. When I opened it the hinges creaked. Inside there was an old phonograph and a dusty 78, cracked. The label said "Modern Times." Next to it was a cowboy hat with a snakeskin band. And a green Bible with a passage marked, dealing with the Nazarene in the garden before he was kissed. i can't get this new dylan tune out of my mind. this one is just a glorious effort, and any dylan fan worth his weight will be hooked after the second listen. i think this is the standout tune of of this great new disc, easily his best since "desire". the background melody of blues #2 has such a sentimental feel to it, that even though it is not a sad song, it sorta chokes me up for some reason. dylan's aged vocals shine like fine wine on this ode to the decent life of a w...
