Bob Dylan

Blonde on Blonde

If Highway 61 Revisited played as a garage rock record, the double album Blonde on Blonde inverted that sound, blending lues, country, ock, and folk into a wild, careening, and dense sound. Replacing the fiery Michael Bloomfield with the intense, weaving guitar of Robbie Robertson, Bob Dylan led a group comprised of his touring band the Hawks and session musicians through his richest set of songs. Blonde on Blonde is an album of enormous depth, providing endless lyrical and musical revelations on each play. Leavening the edginess of Highway 61 with a sense of the absurd, Blonde on Blonde is comprised entirely of songs driven by inventive, surreal, and witty wordplay, not only on the rockers but also on winding, moving allads like "Visions of Johanna," "Just Like a Woman," and "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." Throughout the record, the music matches the inventiveness of the songs, filled with cutting guitar riffs, liquid organ riffs, crisp pianos, and even woozy brass bands ("Rainy Day Women #12 & 35"). It's the culmination of Dylan's electric ock & roll period -- he would never release a studio record that rocked this hard, or had such bizarre imagery, ever again.

My Take: Amazon's "100 Greatest Singer-Songwriter Albums"

Amazon.com recently released a list of "100 Greatest Singer-Songwriter Albums of All Time", compiled by their music editors. What I liked:The rise of the "singer-songwriters" began in the late 1960's and early 1970's. So I highly approve of the top 12 selections on the list: Bob Dylan, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Randy Newman, Neil Youn...

I'm fascinated with great storytellers, and I most prefer those great stories delivered in great music. That said, Bob Dylan fascinates me. How the hell did he concieve all of those incredible characters and stories?! And, he just keeps on delivering them. It's otherworldly; genius; spiritual; insane.I'm still thinking about this story that I read about Dylan a few months ago in The New York Ti...

Its still November 16 in my time zone as I write this.Sometimes for inspiration or to find yet another new way to present vintage material on my blog (Punk Turns 30, which you can read on the MMN that people seem to be really annoyed by... but its there; take it or leave it), I look at all the "this date in history" lists. On this date in 1971, Edie Sedgwick died. She was born and died in the c...

Finally got to see I'm Not There a couple days ago. It's good. Confusing at times, but good. Cate Blancett's performance really stands out. It's definitely something fans would want to check out. This is the song during the opening credits, and also one of my favorites of Dylan.

Bobby D on a beautiful Ohio day.....

I feel a little embarrassed to be posting music to a blog on such a beautiful day; but I am committed to the laptop for most of the day anyhow, so a break must occassionally occur to feed the beast within.....This song seems well-timed and somehow eternally "likely" when considering certain relationships....You Go Your Way - I'll go fly a kite...

On This Date in 1962

On March 19, 1962, Columbia Records released the debut album of a young folksinger named Bob Dylan. I was but 4 years old when this record hit the streets and airwaves, but over the years, Dylan became the most important artist in my life of appreciating music and lyrics.Just take a look at which artist I've got the most music on here on my Mog! Its BOB DYLAN.There is a story, kind of clever ...

25 Best Closing Tracks

Jams bio has a good list and group of songs for their 25 best closing tracks. I was immediately intrigued when it began with Dylan's "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands", an amazing song that could go on for another 20 minutes, imo, and I would never get sick of it. Next time you have an out of town guest, and you walk him past the Chelsea Hotel, and you want to fill him in on how incredibly important this locale is in the annals of American Arts and Letters, you could do worse than beginning by mentioning that "On The Road" was written there. Just as important, Leonard Cohen got a blowjob from Janice Joplin upon a VibraBed there. Both Thomas Wolfe a...

I was never a big fan of Bob Dylan when I was younger. I did enjoy the cover versions by other artists, but there was something about him - that voice? the harmonica? - that I just couldn't get past.Well, I must be more mature, because I find myself listening and appreciating his talents more and more. This is one of my favourites now. It's easy to understand how he influenced a generation of s...

Sunday Cover Story: Bob Dylan

Watching the Oscars broadcast on ABC back in February, I pulled out my iPhone to Shazam the song playing over the closing credits. When the result appeared, I was surprised to discover it was Beck, this being the Academy Awards and all. This being me, of course, I promptly forgot about it. But in my defense, it was pretty late when the Oscars wrapped up, as is television tradition. However, all ...

It was one of those endless summer afternoons, a day so vibrant and perfect you can't imagine it will ever end. Beautiful. We made a run into Manhattan. In the course of taking care of things, my friend started talking to this junky. Hollywood could not have cast a better junky than this guy. Emaciated, dirty, long hair missing in patches. I think he was missing teeth. He said he needed a rid...
