Have a listen to the mp3 while you read. The song is “She’s All States” from the K.I.A. CD “Sonorous Susurrus” (at iTunes "HERE":http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=30919350&s=143441 ) Vocals are by Eugene Spanier and Patrick Duffy. FYI, the lyrics lift a line from John Donne's poem The Sun Rising: “She’s all states/and all princes I”)You can, apparently,

UPDATE: I was hoaxed. The track lengths were right on, but I was the victim of wishful thinking. On another listen, the tracks of this album are faded out in order to conform to the time length signatures for Hooper Bay songs (still very much obscure). I'll keep the text below in this archive of blog posts as a record of my credulity!----I'll reveal a secret to all y'alls. The best place to get...

Singing Pi... and Massive Ballerina

So I made the mistake of mentioning the idea for a song to Sinead O'Connor, and Kate Bush ended up stealing it.Really.Well, maybe. A few years ago (when I was writing for the music mag, see other posts below) I was interviewing Sinead O'Connor, and we were talking about how songs originate, and I mentioned that I'd had a dream where a person was singing the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard.....

Saturday Track: "Dawn Chorus"

I haven't posted a Saturday track in a while, so here's one of my favorite Boards of Canada tracks, "Dawn Chorus" from Geogaddi. I think it's just brilliant. I love all the different sounds from the synths to the bells, strange vocals, and that little burst of bass.

Here Come the Rubber Cops

Firstly and foremost, here's a little something from the new Sexual Objects (Dave Henderson from the Fire Engines) 7", which was produced by Boards of Canada. Love the track below. If The Strokes ever covered Kiss Me, this is what it might faintly sound like. A genuine feel good song. Buy the 7" here. From the 7":MP3: Here Come the Rubber Cops - The Sexual Objects (YSI)Upon first listen, you mig...

The Hi-Scores 12" was a big deal to me. I had this font on my harddrive called OCR-something that was a dead ringer for the text on the cover and one of the best shirts I ever made in high school was ironing a homemade logo onto a shirt I found in a pretty close shade of blue to that of the cover-- shit looked legit, I imagine if anybody other than Nat and Geoff cared about sick beats they may...

Did I Just Hear That?: Thoughts About Hearing Certain Music Where You Least Expect It
over 2 years ago

Out of all the music to hear on a show on ABC Family, I never expected to hear something by Boards Of Canada. But that's exactly what I heard on yesterday's episode of Kyle XY. A scene in Monday's episode featured the track “Dayvan Cowboy” from BOC's recent album, The Campfire Headphase (and the more recent Trans-Canada Highway EP). The very brief use of the track was entirely appropriate (

Boards Of Canada: ??Music Has The Right To Children??

Many thanks to "bgreen":http://mog.com/bgreen, "Wayne Ralph":http://mog.com/Wayne_Ralph, and "max":http://mog.com/max for finally pointing out the door through which I could enter Boards Of Canada world. ??Music Has The Right To Children?? is exactly what I was hoping for Boards Of Canada to be -- something that would happily exist in a playlist with Aphex Twin. Now I'm wondering if I could p...

Stop making that big noise!

I've been obsessed with Aphex Twin, Autechre, Einsturzende Neubauten, FSOL, Squarepusher, Underworld, Plaid, etc. for years and years. But aside from Aphex Twin, no electronic music had the effect on me that Music Has the Right to Children did. Boards of Canada are amazing on every album, but this one is like a perfect complement to Aphex Twin. It is to me the sound of nostalgia.

Boards Of Canada _ Poppyseed

With the extensive collection of samples and one minute synthesized harmonies out there, it's hard for me to keep track of 'Boards Of Canada' these days. I usually end up listening to to music from one of their amazing albums; I'm not even too into the poor quality boot legs that seem to be increasing in number.... But alas, here is one non-album rarity that caught my attention. It clearly sh...

Today, the pink circle is Boards of Canada, the cyan circle is My Bloody Valentine, and the magical dark blue bit is... what? Me? My dubous taste in music?I had to really think about this one. There is a Definite Something that links these two bands, and I'm not talking about a producer or film or relative - at least, not one that I know of! I'll call the magical dark blue bit "uncertainty of p...
