I love Blossom Dearie. She is my favorite tiny voiced singer/songwriter/pianist. A lot of you might recognize her for her contributions to School House Rock. "Unpack Your Adjectives" is the best one she did in my book. She was born in 1928 in Durham, New York. There's so much history and information on her on the web. Here's some links:"Her own website":http://www.angelfire.com/ny/blossom...

This is just too much of a coincidence. This past week I've been playing a mix sent to me by fellow mogger Ivylander and, although I'm not much of a jazz fan, one track caught my attention - by an obscure (at least, to me) jazz vocalist named Blossom Dearie - from the 1950s-60s.A couple of nights ago I was reading the latest MOJO and was surprised to find a one-page article about her written by...

From the LA Times' music blog: Somewhat lost in the flurry of Grammy activity was the news that Blossom Dearie, the jazz-cabaret singer with a voice as sweet and precious as her name, died of natural causes in her Greenwich Village apartment Saturday. With a breezy, gentle vocal style that echoed a little girl's innocence, Dearie's appeal as a vocalist lies beyond genre classifications. In fact...

Track:I'm Old-Fashioned
Word has come that Blossom Dearie, jazz singer, pianist, she of the beguilingly soft and witty voice, has passed away in New York at 84. She sounded like no one else, had divine taste, and was performing at cabarets as recently as a few years ago. Here she is with one of Rodgers and Hammerstein's more whimsical songs:Some of you youngsters may know her from Schoolhouse Rock:I myself am partial t...

As a kid my earliest music video memories are of Schoolhouse Rock, a series of educational shorts that used songs to grab a generation's attention and educate them on multiplication tables, U.S. history, and grammar rules. To my young ears she was simply the unknown winsome voice singing "Unpack Your Adjectives" and "Figure Eight". When I started doing song research for my own shows one artist...

This is a post from my Myspace blog. Which I may parallel from time to time. I know this LP has it's share of mentions in the MOGosphere. (Just needed to note that!)"Everyone has their "spring collection" when it comes to music. Some like the pop punk because of the energy in the air, some like more folksy things that merge with nature's born again frolic. I prefer Blossom Dearie. Her voice and...

Dave Frishberg writes with important information on a matter raised in the previous entry. I'm reading the Rifftides discussion about Blossom Dearie and Bill Evans, and who influenced who. I'd like to add my comment:During the late sixties I played a couple weeks solo opposite the Bill Evans Trio at the Village Gate on Bleecker St, and had some conversations with Bill. I asked him how he came..

Blossom's music exuded a sparkling kind of elegance and quick wit. Hers was the kind of jazz you could imagine in the really good Woody Allen movies. She was the Dorothy Parker of jazz.
