Big Dipper's debut not only built on the strengths of the members' antecedent bands, but arguably exceeded them at points. Fresh, lively, and downright fun, the six songs each get a great rip through from the quartet, while Lou Giordano's production makes them all the more appealing. Flecks of glam rock and country twang flesh out the overall presentation, increasing the overall giddy feel. If not original in sound per se, Big Dipper proved themselves to be great at what they do -- it's not just simply power pop, as there's something beyond sweet and sour anthems to lost love at play. Rather darker elements creep in from time to time: "San Quentin, CA" has a slower pace while Goffrier's lyrics cheeringly detail arson, murder, and the wages of sin via prison time. By no means is it delivered in soul-in-torment fashion, making it all the more perversely fun. "Wrong in the Charts" skips along at a brisk pace, with semi-call-and-response vocals and hooks abounding. "Loch Ness Monster" wraps things up with an amusingly detailed study trying to capture the titular creature on film, framed as a romantic tale of woe.
