AMG Review of Ships
JT Griffith
All Music GuideThis is the first of two singles for the song "Ships" from Big Country's 1993 album, Buffalo Skinners. Ships was first released on the U.K.-only No Place Like Home. The version from Buffalo Skinners is with a full band and has a country-tinted guitar sound foreshadowing Stuart Admanson's move to Nashville. This single contains three covers. Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" sounds trite and maudlin, but Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" and Peter Green's "Oh Well" (popularized by Fleetwood Mac) are better than solid. These two Ships singles add six bonus tracks to the Big Country fan's collection. That is a good reason to track these imports down.
