“Estrelita”, composed by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, was a great favorite among listeners in the 1940's. This arrangement was by Andre Kostelanetz originally intended for his wife, Lily Pons, to sing in concert. This particular arrangement of Leo Delibe’s “Les filles de Cadix” was written by Andre Kostelanetz for his wife, soprano Lily Pons in the 1940's. It fits Beverly Sills’ voice like a glove. The song describes the feisty directness of the girls of Cadiz after attending a bullfight with their boyfriends.

Giovanni Batista Martini, an all but forgotten 18th century composer, wrote “Plaisir d’amour” (the title track of this CD). It is a philosophical song about the joys and sorrows of love. “The joy of love lasts only a moment, The sorrow of love lasts your whole life through.” It has a charming pair of soloists: a harpsichord and a solo flute (played by Paige Brook of the NY Philharmonic).
