“Estrelita”, composed by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce, was a great favorite among listeners in the 1940's. This arrangement was by Andre Kostelanetz originally intended for his wife, Lily Pons, to sing in concert. Beverly Sills recorded this song and chart in 1962 when she was a very obscure artist although she had been singing professionally since the late 1930's as a child. This aria from Charles Gounod’s obscure opera “Mireille” has all of the signs of a show stopper. Brilliant runs and other acrobatics are here kept at a minimum but Beverly Sills (who was suffering from a cold at these recording sessions) bravely goes in and turns in a true show stopper!

Giovanni Batista Martini, an all but forgotten 18th century composer, wrote “Plaisir d’amour” (the title track of this CD). It is a philosophical song about the joys and sorrows of love. “The joy of love lasts only a moment, The sorrow of love lasts your whole life through.” It has a charming pair of soloists: a harpsichord and a solo flute (played by Paige Brook of the NY Philharmonic).

This particular arrangement of Leo Delibe’s “Les filles de Cadix” was written by Andre Kostelanetz for his wife, soprano Lily Pons in the 1940's. It fits Beverly Sills’ voice like a glove. The song describes the feisty directness of the girls of Cadiz after attending a bullfight with their boyfriends.

When she died late last year, Beverly Sills left behind a small but powerful legacy of recordings. Her voice can be described as beautiful with touches of poignancy and a warm humanity. She recorded three times with her friend Andre Kostelanetz. This one, recorded in 1975 with the New York Philharmonic, is made up of French and Spanish songs. This implores the adored one to speak only of love in the most tenderest of words.
