I love the early, bawdy and edgy Bette Midler-- in other words, before she got clean and started doing carefully produced covers of Rosemary Clooney and Peggy Lee. She was a wild tour de force and I adore pretty much every indulgent track on "Live At Last" (1977) because even when I don't like the song, I love Bette. "Long John Blues," for instance, is a hysterical, down-and-dirty blues ditty about a dentist who knows that "your cavity needs a little filling" --

In honor of Mothers Day and the fact that I am dead broke I decided to make my mom a mix CD for mothers day. I tried to get old songs that we would listen to on the way to school in the mornings but also add some music that I like to listen to now that she might like. I'm going to be mailing it to her soon so hopefully she likes it lol.

In loveactually, part of the plot involves a washed up singer remaking a old hit into Christmas song to cash in.
Well, life imitates art.
Bette Midler has release a Christmas album. And, just to follow the script, she's remade From a Distance into a Christmas song.
Seriously, the song is just bad.
It's just so damn in your face about being a crude re-hashing for money. I've never liked Bette Midler, but I don't think I can even look at her now without thinking 'corp... MORE

This video seems to have been shot on the set of the 1983-and-still-not-available-on-DVD movie, Get Crazy!, online listings say that it was directed by that film's director, Alan Arkush, also director of Rock'n'Roll High School.
