AMG Review of Symphony #1
"Blue" Gene Tyranny
All Music GuideHerrmann's own concert music is somewhat more traditional - the "Currier and Ives Suite" like Shoshtakovich with "wrong notes" and the lovely "Silent Noon" recalls Delius, whom Herrmann admired - but the music is still remarkable for its clarity of line - especially recommended are "For The Fallen" in this CD and the "Souvenirs de Voyage" for clarinet and string quartet (1967) in "American Chamber Music From Chamber Music Northwest" issued in 1991 on Delos. The bold, solid brass writing in "The Devil and Daniel Webster Suite," from the 1942 film, is similar to that in his sweeping "Symphony #1" played by The Phoenix Symphony conducted by James Sedares.
