The lead single from Friends and Lovers is notable for being the first Butler release with his core live band rather than simply being Butler doing everything with Sakamoto on drums. Keyboardist Terry Miles adds just a touch of classic rock honky tonk to the proceedings with his piano, but otherwise "You Must Go On" is another big and passionate single from Butler. His singing is constantly strengthening from performance to performance, and here he brings not a little sly sensuality to the fore as well. "Souvenir" is a quieter Butler number; him, his guitar, and Miles' piano creating a nice late-night last-drink number (right down to a lyrical reference to a pub, actually!). The puny-titled "Bare With Me" is equally soft and tender, if not more so, with Butler's singing at its softest and his electric guitar sneaking around the mix just so, the song itself building with restrained power at its end, then dramatically returning to its stripped-down start.
