AMG Review of Swingin' Down the Lane
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideIncluded on this LP are two of Benny Goodman's Camel Caravan radio shows of 1939. The Goodman Orchestra has a few instrumentals (most notably "Hartford Stomp" and "Undecided"); Martha Tilton takes four vocals; host Johnny Mercer takes care of the announcements and a couple of novelty tunes; and the Benny Goodman Quartet (which at the time included pianist Teddy Wilson, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton and drummer Buddy Schutz) is featured on "I Found a New Baby" and "Deep Purple." A worthwhile if not overly essential album.
