AMG Review of In Stockholm 1959

All Music GuideFor his 1959 European tour, clarinetist Benny Goodman led one of his finest postwar bands, a ten-piece with such notables as trumpeter Jack Sheldon, trombonist Bill Harris, tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips and vibraphonist Red Norvo. Although BG is the main star throughout this concert performance (which mostly featured swing-era warhorses, including a three-minute, five-song hits medley), his sidemen do have short spots, and guest singer Anita O'Day takes four spirited vocals. Highlights of the Swedish CD include "Slipped Disc," "Honeysuckle Rose," some Dixielandish ensembles on "I Want to Be Happy," and O'Day's scatting on "Four Brothers."
