AMG Review of Avalon: The Small Bands, Vol. 2 (1937-1939)

All Music GuideThis second of two CDs reissuing all of Benny Goodman's Trio and Quartet recordings for Victor starts out with eight performances co-starring the magical team of vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Gene Krupa (including their famous version of "Avalon"), and then finishes off with 14 recordings from the post-Krupa era. The latter have either Dave Tough or Buddy Schutz in the drummer's spot and three cuts (including a classic version of "I Cried for You") add bassist John Kirby. No matter what the personnel, Benny Goodman is in top form on these highly enjoyable classics from his early prime.
