Brazilian bossa nova sensation, Babel Gilberto announced her plans to sweep in and show us that bossa nova is still alive and kicking, just the fad-dance associated with it has faded away. Gilberto announced her tour which will include dates in Miami, New York, Westhampton Beach, in New York, and Washington, as well as two jazz festivals in Vancouver and Ottawa. She will be promoting her album, Momento (Ziriguiboom/Crammed) which is similar in style to her previous... MORE

BEBEL GILBERTO SINGS “O CAMINHO”

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(56)
Blog post image previewOnce again, there are many things to love in this song’s performance. Brazilian legend Joao Donato plays his minimalist piano styling which fit into the fabric of the song with perfection. If anything, Gilberto sings with even greater gradations of tone and shadings. It’s a very short song, however, it has it’s own quiet rewards.

BEBEL GILBERTO SINGS “RIVER SONGS”

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(56)
Blog post image preview“River Songs” has a very interesting strain to it. The melodic lines twist and curve onto each other much as a stream becomes a river becomes an ocean. Throughout it all, Gilberto traces everything with her very subtle talents.

BEBEL GILBERTO SINGS “SIMPLESMENTE”

(27)
Blog post image previewThe apple didn’t fall too far from the tree when Bebel Gilberto decided to perform. Her father is Joao Gilberto, best known for participating in the 1963 blockbuster album “The Girl From Ipanema” with Stan Getz and the composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. This CD is, in every way, a jump ahead of that famous album yet is in the same calming, soothing bossa nova genre. Gilberto herself has a breathy delivery which suits the style of the music. “Simplesmente” is full of shifting ... MORE

BEBEL GILBERTO SINGS “ALL AROUND”

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(34)
Blog post image previewAll languages will ultimately fail in describing this song, “All Around.” If possible, this is probably the most calming of all of the songs on this CD with soft vocal overlays, strings and a flute in G with the breathy delivery of Gilberto seducing the listener’s mind and emotions.

Bossa Nova Dub

Album:
Track: Samba Da Bencao - (4Hero remix)

4hero puts a dub spin on some Bebel Gilberto. Perhaps not a classic dub in the reggae sense, but dub in the dance music sense, which of course owes inspiration to the Jamaican originators. This song works for me on so many levels and in so many moods. Not quite dance-able, not quite relaxing, it just bores into my head, a unique take on Brazilian music. Let me know what you think. And as for the headline, I guess this is a Samba Dub, or is it a Bossa Nova Dub? I don't kn... MORE

Artists You Should Know About #1: Bebel Gilberto

Artist:
Album:
Track: Cada Beijo - (studio)
(59)
Blog post image previewI've been neglecting my MOG for a couple of months now, but I'm finally settled into a new house and about to start a new job (more on that later) and I think I can return to posting more regularly. To motivate myself, I'm going to try every week to post a track by an artist I particularly like - not necessarily a new artist, or a new track, but just something I happen to really love that I suspect a lot of people, even the discerning MOGger crowd, don't know well enough... I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things but just read this in the NY Times and I'd thought I'd share with mog-o-sphere... CALL it what you will: individuality, perhaps contrarianism? The narrow confines of established music categories seem to bring out the defiance in artists. The Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the well-regarded musicians João Gilberto and Miúcha, suggests she is pioneering her own style: “Bebelmusic.” Ms. Gilberto’s second album w... MORE

Coming to the Realization

Artist:
Album:
Track:
(15)
Listening to this song last night has helped me make peace with the fact that I'd much prefer spending my evenings sprawled out on the couch, eyes closed, with the stereo on. Nope, nothing else. Just that. So. Wanted to share the tune.
