Brazilian bossa nova sensation, Babel Gilberto announced her plans to sweep in and show us that bossa nova is still alive and kicking, just the fad-dance associated with it has faded away. Once again, there are many things to love in this song’s performance. Brazilian legend Joao Donato plays his minimalist piano styling which fit into the fabric of the song with perfection. If anything, Gilberto sings with even greater gradations of tone and shadings. It’s a very short song, however, it has it’s own quiet rewards.

“River Songs” has a very interesting strain to it. The melodic lines twist and curve onto each other much as a stream becomes a river becomes an ocean. Throughout it all, Gilberto traces everything with her very subtle talents.

The apple didn’t fall too far from the tree when Bebel Gilberto decided to perform. Her father is Joao Gilberto, best known for participating in the 1963 blockbuster album “The Girl From Ipanema” with Stan Getz and the composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. This CD is, in every way, a jump ahead of that famous album yet is in the same calming, soothing bossa nova genre. All languages will ultimately fail in describing this song, “All Around.” If possible, this is probably the most calming of all of the songs on this CD with soft vocal overlays, strings and a flute in G with the breathy delivery of Gilberto seducing the listener’s mind and emotions.

4hero puts a dub spin on some Bebel Gilberto. Perhaps not a classic dub in the reggae sense, but dub in the dance music sense, which of course owes inspiration to the Jamaican originators. This song works for me on so many levels and in so many moods. Not quite dance-able, not quite relaxing, it just bores into my head, a unique take on Brazilian music. Let me know what you think. I've been neglecting my MOG for a couple of months now, but I'm finally settled into a new house and about to start a new job (more on that later) and I think I can return to posting more regularly. To motivate myself, I'm going to try every week to post a track by an artist I particularly like - not necessarily a new artist, or a new track, but just something I happen to really love that I suspect a lot of people, even the discerning MOGger crowd, don't know well enough...
