AMG Review of Barry Harris Plays Barry Harris
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideFor this excellent Xanadu set (an LP that was reissued briefly on CD), pianist Barry Harris (not particularly famous as a composer) performs seven of his catchy originals, most of which are based on the chord changes of bop standards. With fine assistance from bassist George Duvivier and drummer Leroy Williams, Harris shows that if he had pursued this path, he might have come up with a few standards of his own creation. "Father Flanagan" (dedicated to pianist Tommy Flanagan) is most memorable.
