Band of Horses

Everything All the Time

Band of Horses is the phoenix ascending from the carcass of Carissa's Weird, Ben Bridwell and Matt Brooke's former band. (But what happened to the proposed November 16th?) While the penchant for beautiful melody is present everywhere here, that's pretty much where the similarity stops. Whereas their former project centered itself on slower-than-codeine-cough-syrup-on-a-cold-day, lushly textured sad-pop, Band of Horses is a full-on indie rock band that writes and plays loud, raw, mid-tempo pop songs and really loves Neil Young. Gone are the slow, layered, weepy, singly tempoed songs of heartbreak and loss. No more violins, no more space, no more, no more. Bridwell's vocals are stretched here (and they could be mistaken for Wayne Coyne's or a young Young's on first listen), but he and Brooke have a different m.o. here. They play a plethora of instruments between them, from banjos to pedal steels and piano, and Chris Early pays bass along with an assortment of drummers that includes touring kit man Tim Meining, though Sera Cahoone (another ex-Clarissa's) sits in the chair on about half this set. The ramped-up electric guitars are a welcome wind blowing through this heavier, denser music. Check the dreamy Chris Bell-meets-Crazy Horse "First Song" or the snare-popping "Wicked Gil," with a killer six-string finale. "Funeral"'s dynamic hints at something less meaty but then kicks into gear. It's nearly anthemic. There are more meditative moments, though. The country-ish "Part One" is acoustic and tender. But "The Great Salt Lake," which follows it, is simply majestic. There is a Beach Boys melody in here somewhere (perhaps something extrapolated from "Sloop John B"?) and Bridwell's vocal warbles dangerously close to B. Wilson's, but is much murkier -- a more blissed-out, distorted jangle-fest. "Weed Party" is a silly, raucous country-rocker that crosses the Byrds with latter-day Hüsker Dü. The closer is the spare, meditative "St. Augustine"; it's as beautiful as Young's "Through My Sails," from Zuma. Everything All the Time isn't a perfect album. It gets a little long in the tooth in places and samey-sounding. The exuberance is the mirror image of Carissa's Weird's downer reserve; it's as if the fellas were trying really hard -- perhaps a little too hard -- to distance themselves from their previous incarnation. Nonetheless, it's a decent first effort that warrants repeated listening.

BAND OF HORSES – The Funeral – It’s Deep, If You Can Handle It

This song is so beautiful, but the video makes me sad. When the man sees the apparition of the dog in his cocktail it's like the memory of a time when something meant more to him than nothingness. Him sitting there forever staring and wondering and wasting his life, rooted to the [...]

We went to see Band of Horses this past weekend at The Palladium in Dallas. I don't feel like writing a lengthy review, but the show was great overall. It's a good thing we saw them when we did, because they have recently had to cancel a few dates (according to their MySpace page). We were upset that they didn't play 'I Go to the Barn...', but they played the snot out of 'The Great Salt Lake...

The year in music 2006 was a year of extremes. While The Corporate Dictators continued to struggle More and More Listeners were able to listen to More and More Bands literally All The Time! The Internet Revolution has taken hold of all of us Music Lovers and we are all conscripts in the war to free the music, most of us by choice some by chance. In a year when cd sales are at an all time Low,...

jess and i were watching this show last night over at this guy's house, and we were pretty stoned. it was this program about people on death row, or with life sentences, and they said that this one guy would not be eligible for parole until TWENTY THOUSAND TEN. now, that's definitely what they said. but it us about 10 minutes to really confirm that when they said that, they meant the year 20...

The Band of Horses played at the W.O.W. Hall in Eugene, Oregon, and I saw them. They were great live! The singer's voice is really awesome. He was wearing this sky blue hat with horses embroidered on it. I jokingly asked him if I could have it (well, the beer in me asked, anyways), and he said no. They were really tired and grumpy from the long road trip, so they didn't hang out or anythin...

How the hell does this keep happening to me??

I cant help thinking that I have some kind of aversion to hipsters bearing music... I keep finding that people reccomend music to me and I just cant get into it. Then, at some point, a week or two later, it pops up on my playlist and I cant quit listening to it... This time, Band of Horses. I cant quit listening to them for the life of me... its like a more alt/country Built To Spill... which i...

It seems to me that this MOG Wars thing was taken a little too seriously by all of us. I have not seen a recent count, but I have the feeling that there will not be any reloading going on. I was amazed at the amount of music deaths in the past three days, and the creativity moggers put into the posts describing their demise. What now is the question on my mind. Is it wrong to want another MOG w...

Rockin' out like it was 2006

In hindsight, I think that "Everything All The Time" by 'Band of Horses' was my favorite album of 2006. And someone told me once that hindsight is 20/20. The more times it spins, the more I am falling in love with it...just great stuff, start to finish.

Time for yet another one of my famous music-related projects. This time, I created a compilation CD for the novel, Snow Falling on Cedars. The book is set on a fictional island in Puget Sound, so I only used artists from the Pacific Northwest (except for Asobi Seksu because the Japanese and strawberries were both critical to the story). For those of you unfamiliar with the book, here's a brief...

How long have I been missing out? When did you find out about them? The Last.fm player has done it again! I was listening to "Fleet Foxes Radio" last night for hours and I discovered a whole slew of "new" music. My goal is to post a "new" band a day for as long as I can this summer. Today- Band o...

I havent listened to this song in a while. It reminds me of last summer, when I didnt have to work, and all I would do was balance on railroad tracks while hanging out with friends and talking about nothing...How I miss it. Jobs suck. Here is the railroad bridge I spent my days walking across. I should go back soon.
