Austin-based instrumental band Balmorhea released their third LP earlier this year, and shortly thereafter a few of their musically-minded friends took a song of their choice and applied the remix treatment. The compiled remix album features the likes of Eluvium, Tiny Vipers, Library Tapes, and Helios adding their own unique, subtle touches to Balmorhea's cinematic sound. Head over to the Aust...
You may remember Austin’s Balmorhea from a previous post several months ago. But with Smansmith graciously informing us of a remixed All Is Wild, All Is Silent, I thought now would be as good a time as ever to go into just how much I’ve grown to love the non-remixed All Is Wild, All Is [...]
There’s a little part of me that has been quietly waiting for this album for a long, long time. It’s as moving and epic as the most grandiose of classical compositions, but it remains as accessible as anything else we review on this site.
My first encounter with the music of Balmorhea was while watching the video for 'Remembrance', a track taken from new album All is Wild All is Silent set to gloriously nostalgic footage of what looks like rural Texas. Lone figures, dressed in a manner that I imagine has almost been retired from the world, but not quite, make their way through the chaparral.
Austin, Texas' natives Balmorhea will be releasing a new album right after last year's highly successful Rivers Arms. Balmorhea's emotive soundscapes would appeal to the fans of Max Richter and Goldmund (labelmates on Western Vinyl), who want more layers and energy to their music while retaining the tender side of their colleagues.

I simply can't get enough of listening to the experimental wonders of Balmorhea. My job as a web developer sometimes requires me to tune the outside world and focus on the piece of code I am writing. The classical acoustic styles of Balmorhea can put anyone in the zone, however some side effects may include: lower heart rate and sleepiness; as most of their songs are accompanied by a mellow tem...
Balmorhea (BAL-MOR-AY) uses strings and acoustic guitars to paint a windswept landscape in the above video for “Remembrance” off their new album All is Wild, All is Silent. I imagine these guys make for a pretty powerful live set if the location is right. I’m a big fan of seeing strings in person. Tour schedule is below.Jun 19 2009 @ Huckleberry’s Rock Island, IllinoisJun 20 2009 @ Empty B
Din says: Eschewing electric instruments in favor of acoustic sounds, Balmorhea is nonetheless a band that achieves a very contemporary sound. This beautiful recording is the result of - let's see - an excellent composition, fine arrangement, and expert musicianship. Who does that anymore? Lovely work from this treasure of a band from Austin.jazz, classical, other
