All Music GuideNearly 30 years after forming the first version of The Jazz Messengers, drummer Art Blakey was still jazz's top talent scout. For this Concord album such new members as tenor saxophonist Jean Toussaint, pianist Mulgrew Miller and bassist Lonnie Plaxico joined the team of trumpeter Terence Blanchard and altoist Donald Harrison (who had hooked up with Blakey two years earlier) to create a fine set of hard bop. Miller has a ballad medley to himself, Blanchard is well featured on "Tenderly" and the rest of the program features the full band on stimulating group originals.
