Aretha Franklin showed up in D.C. today to sing "America (My Country 'Tis Of Thee)" at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. She brought her diva style via a bedazzled fantastic bow/hat. But did Lady Aretha bring her vocal chops? She definitely fell flat on some notes. Should Beyonce, Tina or somebody else have done it?
In her late sixties heyday, Aretha Franklin wasn't wholly noted for performing "straight" blues, but here she is, from 1969, belting out a remake of "Today I Sing the Blues", a tune she first cut in 1960 with the Ray Bryant Combo. This track doesn't appear to have been posted here before.
Where would Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Dusty Springfield, and even Led Zeppelin have been without the production skills of Jerry Wexler, and the clever handling that was a trademark of Atlantic Records? This track features the arranging skills of Tom Dowd and King Curtis, in New York.Jerry Wexler died on 15th August. He was 91 years old.
...If you remember when the acid jazz scene got rolling back in the 90s, you'll recall the mad dash DJs and audiophiles began to really raid the vinyl stacks in record stores all over the place and then suddenly, outside of ordering from catalogues, you'd be hard-pressed to find what became known as rare groove platters in even the best hidden bins of wherever you dug around on the regular...As...

There's a new compilation of Aretha duets in stores now, but you can skip that. The real news from Aretha comes on two Atlantic/Rhino releases, one a 2-disc collection of demos and outtakes called "Rare and Unreleased Recordings From The Golden Reign of The Queen of Soul" (snappy, huh?), and the other a live CD called (again, deep breath) "Oh Me Oh My: Aretha Live in Philly, 1972." One of the hi...
This man deserves not one, but ten full pages of tributes. To lose him five days after Isaac Hayes really brings another golden era of popular music closer to its end.Everything that can be said about him will be said over the next few days. Yes, he was a flawed individual, whose devotion to the music was almost matched by his devotion to the profit/loss account, but tonight is not the night fo...
This tune comes from the Queen of Soul herself and is one I have in mind whenever I think of what a funky groove really means. "Rock Steady" is the same vintage as yours truly and comes from one of Aretha's best albums Young, Gifted and Black. Produced by Atlantic's Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin, this album features artists like Dr. John on percussion both Donny Hathaway and Billy Preston (organ...
www.lanier2.imeem.comAretha Franklin is one of the giants of soul music, and indeed of American pop as a whole. More than any other performer, she epitomized soul at its most gospel-charged. Her astonishing run of late-'60s hits with Atlantic Records -- "Respect," "I Never Loved a Man," "Chain of Fools," "Baby I Love You," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Think," "The House That Jack Built," and sever...
Aretha Franklin voiced her displeasure with the Grammy writers and Beyonce for her pre performance piece on Sunday night. Before being joined by Tina Turner, Beyonce recited the following piece"Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan ... historical women who have performed on this very stage. When I was a little girl I dreamed of being on this stage. But I knew I needed all the right elements...
It's been quite a day, the moon is on the brink of fullness, and I wanted to hear, ...no, needed to hear, some ARETHA. Good night all you "Do Right" people.
