This is simply breath-taking. Antony takes a super catchy and {admittedly} enjoyable pop song and fuses soul and lyricism into it. Its lightness turns into darkness, its playfulness into tragedy. What was a booty-shaking song now becomes a soundtrack for a doomed love. Somewhere between his haunting voice and the slithering strings, I'm far gone. Don't wait up for me.

I just found this vintage cover of Leonard Cohen's The Guests by Antony and the Johnsons. There's something about Antony's voice, the way he can take over a cover song, just like Nina Simone used to, makes him one of my favorite vocalists singing today.
