"Oh Sister"
Andrew Bird
Soldier On EP(2007) The New York Times has a new blog called Measure for Measure which seeks to delve into the creative process of songwriting. Andrew Bird, Rosanne Cash, Suzanne Vega and Darrell Brown are contributors. The first post, "Words Will Tell", is written by one of my favs - Andrew Bird.I’ve spent most of the last year inside a tour bus. I’ve spoken more words to journalists than I have to my friends and family. All of this has

Albums I absolutely could not wait for and ended up playing on repeat 14 times in a row: Wincing the Night Away by The Shins Like "Kissing the Lipless" of yesteryear, the song "Australia" has become my sure-fire method of introducing this band and guaranteeing a positive response. Standouts include this track, as well as "Sea Legs", "Sleeping Lessons", "Phantom Limb", and "Turn On Me". Neon Bible by The Arcade Fire Disregarding the hype/promos/general hooplah, this ... MORE

Wow. I just got home from the performance of Andrew Bird and his band at the Warfield, and let me say it was an amazing, beautiful experience. So lush, so realized, so great. He plays a amazing violin, whistles like his namesake animal, and sounds like Jeff Buckley when he sings. I feel like I went to church, seriously. Couldn't wait to Mog it, I don't even have my jacket off, that good. Anyone else go tonight, or have seen him live before?... MORE

As soon as I sat down knowing that I intended to write about Andrew Bird, I smiled. The man has the kind of charisma that no one can touch, love or leave him, his type of bravado can only be matched recently by the likes of Stephen Malkmus and/or Rufus Wainwright.
You certainly don’t need to have heard Bird’s previous albums to fully appreciate Armchair Apocrypha, but as additions to your library, they’re each assured to help you dance more wildly around your apartment ... MORE

Have you seen the new Residence Inn ad? To my surprise they are accompanied by Andrew Bird's compositions. Punctilious edited, the visuals are fluidly married to the sound, and the messages are simple and rather clever.

Britta Johnson's new video for Andrew Bird's Imitosis was released just a couple of days ago from Andrew Bird's website.
It is a literal translation with some cute moments. Overall, it falls a little towards the flat side (like the recorded song) from the editing and a lack of exploration and personal interpretation.

I was at a Magnetic Fields show a few years ago (when "I" was just out - geez, was it really in 2004? I'm getting old, fast) at Trinity-St. Paul's United Church on Bloor St. It's a charming and lovely place to see a show (I more recently saw Jose Gonzalez there) - charming, lovely and extremely hot. They didn't build churches with AC back in those days, so I guess you had to be prepared to sweat to death for Jesus. Anyway, it was in the sticky, moist heat of that church th... MORE

I just saw Andrew Bird for the first time last night at the Hollywood Bowl, and I'll say right off that words alone cannot describe the multi-dimensional talents that this guy and his band put on display as day turned to night. I've been listening to Andrew Bird's music for only a couple of months, and it's a tasteful blend of technical virtuosity, creative musical ideas/patterns and quirky insightful narrative. And it's got complexity which is really engaging. Anyw... MORE

Former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno has put together a multi-disc collection, "Songs Of America," that will be released this fall. The set aims to take our younger generation through a musical journey through American history. Sadly, Janet will not fufill our hopes and dreams by singing herself, so we'll settle for acts like Andrew Bird and Danielson.
The epic Songs Of America will span over three discs, which will include over fifty songs total. The d... MORE

I only heard about Andrew Bird last night. How I went through life not hearing this music is beyond me. All I know about him at this moment is that he's an amazing musician, a beautiful voice, an originial point of view. And apparently he worked with the Squirrel Nut Zippers? Anyway, this video is Andrew with his violin, walking through the streets of Montmartre, one of the most romantic and artistic Parisian towns. The music he created on this little walk is very appropriate... MORE

I saw Andrew Bird play recently. I have so much admiration for this charming multi-instrumentalist/ pitch-perfect whistler, and when this song came on my i-pod, I felt the urge to share it with others. I don't know who made this video, though.
Enjoy!... MORE
