Performing in a style a bit reminiscent of Oscar Peterson, pianist Andre Previn plays eight selections from the play Show Boat, six of which are standards plus the obscure "Life on the Wicked Stage" and "I Might Fall Back on You." In addition Previn contributed three newer pieces with the uptempo blues "Lickety Split" having his most impressive solo. Although the partly bitonal treatment given the usually sweet "Make Believe" takes a bit away from the memorable melody, Previn's interpretations of the other pieces are melodic, respectful and swinging. Guitarist Mundell Lowe has an occasional solo and bassist Ray Brown and drummer Grady Tate are typically excellent in support. This fine bop-oriented date shows that Andre Previn (who has spent most of the past three decades in the classical music world) is still the top part-time jazz pianist around.
