AMG Review of A Touch of Elegance
Scott Yanow
All Music GuideThis CD draws its material from five of pianist Andre Previn's Columbia albums of the 1961-62 period. Three of the five albums (13 of the 18 selections on this sampler) feature Previn's piano backed by string orchestras on well-played but easy-listening music that rarely wanders from the melody. Two other songs are taken from a quartet set with trombonist J.J. Johnson while three pieces feature guitarist Herb Ellis and these are more adventurous but overall the music on this CD is overly safe; tasteful but predictable.
