Slightly Tarnished, But Golden

Blog post image preview A century or so ago, George Sterling, poet laureate of San Francisco, referred to the town as his "cool gray city of love." Legendary Bay Area newspaper columnist Herb Caen used the term on many occasions, but it came to mind after listening to The Golden Age, the latest - and surprisingly lovely - album from singer-songwriter Mark Eitzel's dark-hued confessional-folk-rock band American Music Club. As longtime San Francisco residents, Eitzel and AMC guitarist Vudi (t... MORE

Stream New American Music Club Song, "All The Lost Souls Welcome You To San Francisco"

The American Music Club have been one of my favorite bands since I first heard California back in the late '80s. They've got a new album due out February 19 and it's very strong. In other words, I'm playing it over and over. Here's a track off it.

California 34 - Ohio 6

(85)
Here is a useless bit of Blair trivia for ya...i have 34 songs with California in the title, only 6 Ohio songs. Can you name the super six? Yes...its is that boring here. Leave it to Mark Eitzel to give such a hopeful, optimistic song an edge of angst. A very cool version of one one of the truly great songs ever.

New music from American Music Club

(31)
Mark Eitzel’s latest is a really good one, The Golden Age out in February on Merge Records. Here’s my Dusted review which ran last week. American Music ClubThe Golden Age(Merge) There's a moment in "One Step Ahead," about two minutes into what seems a fairly unthreatening, literate pop song, when things take a dramatic turn. The close harmonies slip a half-step closer and turn to discord, the drums rear up in cymbal-clashing rebellion and the guitar, played by longtim... MORE

Blog post image preview San Francisco based American Music club have announced they will release The Golden Age in February 2008. The album is proceeded by 2004's Love Songs for Patriots(Merge), which broke the group's ten year hiatus. AMC mainstays Mark Eitzel and Vudi team up with "the new guys" Sean Hoffman and Steve Didelot for this the 9th full length recording from American Music Club. From the group's blog <http://www.american-music-club.com/>: The overall sound is lighter than on ... MORE

As a North American living in the Netherlands, I am provided with a privledge of a ton of things I probably couldn't do if I were living back America. Aside from the obvious tolerated soft drug policies, I can see bands that play bigger venues in the States perform at smaller clubs in Europe. I've seen Bob Mould with 120 people in the crowd. Girl Talk, TV on the Radio, The Hold Steady, all with a crowd of less than 200.This week, American Music Club "rocks" out to what ... MORE

Blog post image preview I was never really all that "here"...gonna try a fresh start on the MOG blog thing...we'll see...
At the moment I'm listening to the new American Music Club (The Golden Age)...out Feb 19th, 2008 on Merge (in the interest of full disclosure, my employer, at least for the next few weeks)...some beautiful stuff on here...got me in quite the wistful mood...that Eitzel sure can croon...and on this outing he's cut back on the vitriol and anger a little bit (at least compared to L... American Music Club - Everclear CD

Artist:
Album:
Track:
Other Tags: mark eitzel, amc, why won't you stay, ex-girlfriend, dead part of you
Blog post image preview American Music Club - Everclear CD The difficult fifth album. Recorded for another label and well overbudget, Everclear both suffers and excels for its production shortcomings. A thick wash of reverb has been thrown over the proceedings and songs are either hopelessly buried in the ambient sludge ("The Confidential Agent") or enhanced to supersonic glory ("Sick of Food"). Singer Mark Eitzel's lyrics are increasingly more despondent, but he's spot-on beautiful loser terr... MORE

Blog post image preview In the early '90s, the American Music Club ruled the San Francisco underground. In the South of Market world where they lived and worked, the members of AMC were stars. They recorded a series of albums, beginning with Engine and including California, Everclear, Mercury and San Francisco that were mind-blowing at the time, and now - more than a decade later - show themselves to be timeless masterpieces. American Music Club in their mid-'90s heyday. The band made a ... MORE

American Music Club are one of the great San Francisco bands. They were indie before anyone really used that term. This track, "Rise," is very powerful, and is off Everclear.
