I Love You

There's little doubt that Amanda Blank is her own woman. A torrid rapper and inventive lyricist, she lit up the Baltimore club scene during 2005-2006, and her closing verse on Spank Rock's "Bump" provided a highlight to one of the best albums of 2006, YoYoYoYoYo. With so much talent on display already, the only concern leading up to the release of I Love You was whether her jump from featured artist to top billing could avoid the usual wide-distribution pitfalls. Blank proves mostly up to the challenge, floating a few great tracks and plenty of pounding productions, despite sounding familiar to fans of M.I.A. or Santigold. The similarities begin with "A Love Song," where it's easy to see the roots of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," which is just as reflective and just as reliant on an '80s pop touchstone (here it's LL Cool J's "I Need Love" instead of "Straight to Hell" by the Clash) -- and, not coincidentally, just as produced by Diplo and Switch. Elsewhere, she spends a lot of time jump-starting a party, recalling Santigold's pop version of club music. The best tracks here feature her excellent rapping skills over productions from XXXChange, and the one where she sounds the most natural is the Spank Rock co-feature "Gimme What You Got.")

Her desire to dominate the rhetorical battlefield of her sexual conquests is entirely convincing.

A bit late, but don't worry about it. Our favorite misogynistic female rapper (if you will) is back with her full-length debut. Previously building fame off of dirty verses on songs by Spank Rock, XXXChange and Aaron LaCrate, Mrs. Blank's full length debut is brilliantly produced and never loses the tenacity Blank showed in her [...]

Sometimes, we just don't know what we get ourselves into here at Strange Glue. Week after week we, the writers, choose our respective albums, retreat to our respective corners and get down to doing what we do best; writing. Usually, it's a refreshing and enjoyable thing to do as we're able to vent and share our passion with others but, on that rare occasion, that scarce but always inevitable oc...

Track Review: Diplo's Beats > Your Beats

There's no doubt, Amanda Blank's debut LP I Love You has many moments where it's as terrifyingly bad as it's terrifyingly good. But my god, when I say terrifyingly good I mean terrifyingly. Like, The Shining terrifying."Something Bigger, Something Better" is one of those moments. Diplo lays down a beat that is sexy, for sure, but it's just so odd. I don't even really know how to describe the so...

Until this summer, Philadelphia-bred mistress of ceremonies Amanda Blank could be found both everywhere and nowhere; a fixture found in the liner notes and "featuring" sections on collaboration tracks from just about every hip-hop tested, indie cred-approved artist since the mid-'00's, including Santigold, M.I.A., Spank Rock, Pase Rock, Ghostface Killah, and N.A.S.A. As a result, [...]
