Although this collection from the Jet Star label features several re-recorded versions of Alton Ellis classics, it doesn't really matter, since Ellis singing anything (in any version) is bound to be good. With his impeccable, easy phrasing, Ellis is sort of the Jamaican Marvin Gaye, and while he is a fine writer, too, the strongest tracks here are covers that Ellis redefines and makes his own. "Willow Tree" is simply gorgeous, while Ellis' version of the Blood, Sweat & Tears hit "You Make Me So Very Happy" takes the bombast out of the song and replaces it with a hushed, wistful joy. Reggae Max works as an introduction to this subtle singer, and certainly no one will be shortchanged by picking it up, but it lacks too many key tracks ("Cry Tough," "Dance Crasher") to be deemed essential.
